Curriculum Policy

Approved by the Tawa College Board of Trustees June 2009.  Next review 2011.

Rationale

Tawa College is required to deliver curriculum that is appropriate to student and community needs and aims to give every student the best possible learning opportunity. Assessment and reporting are integral to the teaching and learning process and should provide quality information for students, teachers and parents/whanau about the achievement and progress of students.
.

Purpose

The curriculum should strive to meet the learning needs of all students. It should reflect the Strategic Plan, and meet all legal and regulatory requirements. The policy applies equally to all students including students who are identified as gifted and talented and those with special needs.

Assessment is a measure of the degree to which learning objectives have been met. The College will develop and maintain good assessment and reporting practices. Such practices will:
1.  Identify learning needs so resources can be effectively targeted, teaching methods improved, and .
    curriculum modified as necessary.
2.  Provide feedback to students, and report to parents/whanau. .
3.  Measure student attainment against the learning objectives of National Curriculum statements and .
    Achievement/Unit Standards.
4.  Ensure fairness and equity in all assessment within the school. .
5.  Ensure that processes exist for the collation and safe storage of student information. .
.

Guidelines

Curriculum

1.  The College will endeavour to ensure that the provision of resources for curriculum delivery are equitable in terms of meeting the needs of all students given funding provisions.

2.  The College will offer as broad a curriculum to students as is possible, for as long as that is possible.
(Note: in practice this means that the curriculum in Years 9, 10 and 11 will be broad, with specialisation in subject choice, commencing in Year 12).
At Senior level, the Curriculum will include subjects both with an academic and a vocational focus.

3.  It is recognised that constraints will, from time to time, be placed on the delivery of the curriculum.
The availability of specialist staff, specialist facilities, funding and the constraints of the timetable may affect the ability to deliver of the curriculum.

4.  Delivery of the curriculum will be monitored annually by HODs and senior staff.

5.  The College will have a clear statement of the College policy in relation to a comprehensive Health Education programme and will consult on them regularly with the school community.
