Leaving Certificate

On leaving secondary school, all students may apply for a Leaving Certificate signed by the Principal and stating the form level reached.


NCEA Level 1

This qualification replaced the School Certificate qualification in 2002. At Tawa College students in Year 11 will continue to study 6 subjects for the NCEA Level 1. Each student will receive a Record of Learning which will specify the work undertaken and the credits achieved.


NCEA Level 2

This qualification replaced Sixth Form Certificate in 2003. A course in English is compulsory. As in NCEA Level 1 each student will receive a record of learning which will specify the work undertaken and the credits achieved.


NCEA Level 3

This qualification replaced the University Bursary Qualifications in 2004. Each student will receive a record of learning which will specify the work undertaken and the credits achieved.


NCEA Level 4

A more challenging qualification for the able student at Year 13 level.


Unit Standards

Some subjects at Years 11, 12 and 13 offer Unit Standards as a qualification. These Unit Standards are modules of work worth between 1 and 5 credits, and their achievement will be recorded on a student's Record of Learning.


University Entrance

This is not a qualification, but UE will allow students access to a New Zealand university.
For this students need 14 credits from each of two "Approved Subjects";
.they also need another 14 credits which may come from any other Level 3 subject (or from a combination of two other subjects at Level 3).
Advice should be sought about non-approved subjects.
.In addition to this they need a total of 4 reading and 4 writing credits from Level 2 or above (from either English or Maori), and 14 credits in Mathematics from Level 1 or above.

However universities also set their own requirements over and above UE alone. Students are advised to contact individual universities for further information.


Accreditation

Tawa College is accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act 1989 to provide education and training based on the National Qualifications Framework.
