Dragon Boating - March 2006
The annual Wellington Dragon Boat Festival took place on Sunday, 12 March at the Frank Kitts Waterfront. Representing Tawa College was one 22-strong girls' crew. With eight intensive training sessions under their belts, the girls had acquired the basic skills needed to compete. However the practised 'race start' unfortunately fell apart in the first heat, and the crew ended up in 5th place, dropping them into the B grade for the rest of the day. But after a quick, impromptu timing practice the performance of the team lifted and they achieved a fantastic 2nd placing in their second heat. The result put them through to the grand final of the B grade.
In this third race they were up against four tough competitors from all over New Zealand, but managed to rise to the occasion and come 3rd, which meant they finished at 3rd place overall for the B grade.
Despite the freezing change of weather, many supporters still turned out to cheer the Tawa crew on, and both participants and spectators had a thoroughly enjoyable day.
