Rankin Cup Hockey - August 2006

Tawa College Boys Hockey Team has won 9th place in the National Rankin Cup tournament to keep Wellington up with the rest of the country.

The national top ranked Rankin Cup boys hockey competition was held in Christchurch last week (14-18 August), with Tawa College and Wellington College taking on the remaining top 16 boys secondary school hockey teams in New Zealand.

Rankin Cup was the usual tightly contested competition. Tawa College only lost two of their six games, being defeated by both finalists Auckland Grammar and Palmerston North Boys High School, to come 9th for all New Zealand secondary schools.

"The team went from strength to strength," said coach Warren Kerruish, after having lost a number of key and experienced players from 2005. Unfortunately both Auckland Grammar and Palmerston North Boys shared the same pool as Tawa, forcing Tawa to play and win top place in the bottom eight pool. The Rankin Cup was won by Auckland Grammar after extra time and stroke play-off. Wellington College finished 14th.
